As I got up to address the Castrol management team this morning, I was surrounded by these huge blown-up posters on every wall. The inside joke is that the date on the magazine is 1994.

Castrol is singularly focused on lubricants for internal combustion engines (ICE), selling billion of black gold per year.

Well, I had to tell them that it’s all going to end. Not a question of if, but when. Planes, trains and automobiles will ice the ICE. Electric motors do not need an oil change.

In the future, when all vehicles are electric, we will look back to the current era and marvel that there were a billion oil-burners driving around the planet wasting 80% of their energy as heat and applying only 0.3% of that energy to moving the passenger. We will look at our oil reservoir of long-chain hydrocarbons like we do the Amazon forest, a treasure trove of raw materials, and shake our head: they just burned it?… What an uncreative use of that rich resource. Currently 90% of organic chemicals come from petroleum and natural gas.

Of course, they thought EVs would eventually make a difference, in the distant foggy future.

I countered that there are already 120 million EVs driving around China today… manufactured by 1,300 different companies. EVs have been the best selling powered vehicle category in China since 2007.

What?

I am referring to two-wheel vehicles (E2Ws – scooters and eBikes). From those economies of scale, the four largest vendors of E2Ws are starting to sell cheap K cars using similar technology (brushless motors and VRLA batteries). For the Chinese buyer, the total cost of operation is less than public transportation on buses, and affords greater flexibility and psychologically, less SARS fears. And of course, the government is proactively driving the conversion, with bans on gas motorcycles in 150 cities.

1994 is not like 2014.

In total, 25 Big Boys were built, in two groups of ten and five locomotives. All were coal burning, with large grates to burn low quality Wyoming coal from mines owned by the railroad. One locomotive, #4005, was experimentally converted to oil burning. Unlike experience with the Challenger types, this change was not successful and the locomotive soon reverted to coal. The cited reason for this failure was the use of a single burner, which, with the Big Boy’s larger firebox, created unsatisfactory and uneven heating. It is unknown why multiple burners were not employed, though with dieselization in full swing after 1945 the company probably lost interest in further development of steam.

an oil lamp which has been converted to take an electric bulb, but you can still get an idea of how it worked with oil running down from the reservoir to the burner, and heat shields above to deflect the hot gases from the suspension. I suspect this would have had a mantle of sorts and a glass chimney.

This is a waste oil burner that runs on WVO, WMO or any other type of used oil. The Burner is simple in construction and the waste oil is burnt cleanly once the burner is up to temp. The benefit of Waste oil burners is of course free fuel. My goal is to have an output of 200Kw which equates to burning 20L an hour of waste Vegetable oil. The burner itself is a 4.5 Kg gas bottle with the top cut out. I inserted a 1- 3/4″ pipe into the side which has a 90o bend inside the burner to maximize the swirl effect. this ensures the oil is burnt cleanly by allowing the burner to operate in an excess air condition. The oil is fed in through the airtube and is blown in with the help of the 900W vac cleaner head I am using to supply the air. As I was able to max out the air supply in this test, I would like to find an industrial type blower with more output and would run a lot quieter. In this test the fuel drum was approx 3 ft above the burner and with a 10mm hose was unable to keep up with the fuel demand until the drum had become quite hot. When i have the burner completed I will either use a small pump to pressurize the tank or use a fuel pump. The burning chamber of the gas bottle is surrounded by a 205L drum with both ends cut out. the drum and burner are raised on bricks to get a drought around the burner and to slightly cool the outer drum. Given the drum still glows bright red, I will probably try to use a forced air supply to cool the space between the drum and the burner and …
